An amazingly talented professional piano player once told me, “There is no such thing as wrong notes, only notes that sound wrong.” At the heart of what he is saying, I believe he understands something about the true purpose and essence of music. Though music contains many similarities to mathematics, and many like to make the obvious comparisons, music serves a much more eloquent purpose. Music is arguably the deepest language we have, for it can communicate with great feeling, emotion, depth, and fervor where words can too often fail. It does not have to have a right or wrong answer.

Music to me will always be a time-based art; it is fleeting by nature. It is something that is experienced over time, and ever-changing, which makes it more powerful and more precious. Perhaps the most important aspect of music is that it does not mean the same thing to everyone. People have differing opinions about it, everyone is affected by it differently, and most importantly, justifiably so. Music is so big, that it can accommodate the whims and desires of the most deserving as well as the most careless, and yet retains an inexhaustible source of influence in almost any capacity imaginable.

As Stravinsky once said:

 “I know that the twelve notes in each octave and the variety of rhythm offer me opportunities that all of human genius will never exhaust.”

Musician Lucas Denzer will be conducting a FREE seminar at the Piano Outlet in Nipomo, 485 N. Frontage Road (off the 101 at the Tefft St. exit), this Thursday, April 5th, 2012, from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m., on “Introduction to Music Fundamentals, Reading, and Standard Notation.”

This informative session will be repeated on April 19th, May 3rd, and May 17th.

We just received Kurzweil’s new Compact Upright, CUP-2, digital, the latest addition to their growing family of home digital pianos.  This instrument features the usual terrific Kurzweil sounds, including their famous Triple Strike Grand Piano (with a dedicated Grand Piano button), and world-class sounds in every category: rich strings and orchestral sounds, realistic electric pianos, drums, basses, guitars and synthesized sounds.

The Kurzweil CUP-2 has an 88-note “wood embedded” graded hammer action and genuine wood keys, for a balanced response and great feel.  Its sleek cabinet is classy-looking with an ebony polish finish, but, at 42” high and less than 17” deep, it earns the name “compact.”  It includes a slow-close fallboard, like high-end acoustic pianos.

And although the CUP-2 doesn’t take up much space, with it’s 130-watt, bi-amped, 4-speaker system, this digital piano fills the room with spectacular sound.

It’s been almost a month since our last post and the summer is in full swing!  We’ve been busy selling pianos at both stores and pursuing a new business venture.

Our Kurzweil products continue to be good sellers.  The new Kurzweil MP10 digital piano has so many great sounds and lots of popular features.  We also have two earlier Kurzweil models – the Mark Pro TWOi and Mark Pro THREEi – with the same Kurzweil quality.  If you’re not familiar with Kurzweil, come in and check out the great sounds and feel of their digital pianos.

At the moment, Los Angeles is bracing for what’s being called “Carmageddon,” the closing of 10 miles of the 405 Freeway over this coming weekend, July 16-17.  (The Los Angeles Times has an interesting article about the history of the 405:  http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-405-history-20110714,0,633354.story).  Luckily, we’re up in Ventura County and shouldn’t be affected too much by the closure.  If you’re in Los Angeles County and want to head away from the 405 closure mess, come on up to the beaches in Ventura County.  Stop by and shop for a piano on your way!

There have been many studies over the years about the benefits of learning to play a musical instrument such as piano, including having better ability to focus, improved memory, better discipline and creativity.

A new study, published in Neuropsychology, seems to indicate that the benefits of childhood music lessons last for many years.  In this study, reviewed online at http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=143536 (among other places), researchers found that in a group of 70 adults, of ages 60-83, the ones that were musicians (those with at least a decade of music experience), had much higher scores on memory tests, including the ability to process information (organize, plan, manage time) and adapt to new information.  About half of the musicians in the study were pianists.

There’s no time like the present to get your children started on piano lessons. And remember that it’s never too late to learn!
